Permit Information

The City of Cookeville has adopted the 2003 International Building, Residential, Plumbing, Mechanical and Fuel Codes, along with 2003 NFPA I excluding NFPA 5000, and the 2005 NEC Electrical Code.

Permits are required to: 

  • Construct a building 
  • Alter or remodel a building
  • Repair a building
  • Move a building
  • Demolish a building
  • Change the occupancy of a building
  • Erect or construct a sign
  • Install or alter fire-extinguishing apparatus, elevators, engines, steam boilers, furnaces, heaters, incinerators, or other heating apparatus or other appurtenances
  • Yard Sales
  • Electrical installations

If a project is in excess of $25,000, a Tennessee Contractor's License and proof of Workers Compensation Insurance are required.

*An Owner may act as general contractor to build his own residence to live in, 1 house every 2 years.
