How to Apply

Applications will be accepted and received Monday through Friday from 8:00 am until 4:30 pm at the Human Resources Office located in the Cookeville Municipal Building, 45 East Broad Street, Cookeville, Tennessee 38501. Applications may be accepted or received through the U.S. Postal Service or in person.

Employment Information

Examination Records

Applicants receiving a qualifying score will be notified of examination results as quickly as possible. Individual scores or standings will not be given via telephone.

Hiring Procedure and Selection

Qualified applicant lists are established according to overall performance in the examination process. Applicants must be successful in all phases of the examination process to be considered for employment.

Probationary Period

The probationary period is the final phase of the selection process. Each appointment to a full-time position shall be subject to a one (1) year probationary period.

Employee Benefits

  • Vacation: Twelve (12) working days are accrued each year.
  • Sick Leave: Twelve (12) working days are accrued each year.
  • Holidays: The City of Cookeville observes ten (10) holidays.
  • Working Conditions: The basic workweek is five (5) days and forty (40) hours.
  • Overtime: Time and a half will be paid for all work over forty (40) hours.
  • Health Plan: All full-time employees are provided with group health, accident, dental and life insurance at a cost of $10 per week to the employee.
  • Retirement: All eligible employees participate in the Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System at no cost to them.
 

Training

All training costs are covered by the department and include an eight-week basic police academy and a fourteen-week field-training program. All training is attended in an on-duty status.
