The Family Protection Unit was formed in 1997 with the primary responsibility of monitoring the Cookeville Police Department's response to domestic violence complaints. The unit conducts follow-up investigations on all felony and misdemeanor domestic assault cases and provides domestic violence related victim assistance and referrals. Secondly, the unit investigates all Child Abuse, Child Sexual Abuse and Elder Abuse complainants. The unit averages over 45 new cases each month.
The Cookeville S.A.F.E.T.Y. program is a long-term prevention prospectus created to break the cycle of domestic violence. The program, which has been in existence from late 1999, is self-sufficient in that the Cookeville Police Department has committed a full-time Family Protection Unit Coordinator to facilitate the program.
